History of Kontagora Emirate

Kontagora was founded in the mid-19th century by Umaru Nagwamatse (Sarkin Sudan), a grandson of Usman dan Fodio. The area grew into a major emirate after a series of conquests between the 1850s and 1860s; it later came under British rule in the early 20th century and is today a significant traditional state in Niger State.
